Community Research Assistants

In order to optimise the impact of the WADE project and to provide benefits to the local communities in the study areas, two community research assistants (CRAs) will be employed by the WADE partners, one each at Rooifontein & Buffelsrivier.

The main tasks of the CRAs will be to:

Assist the researchers with fieldwork in the area,

Maintain the monitoring instrumentation and periodically download hydrological data

Communicate between the researchers and the community.

Community meeting at Rooifontein, November 2004.

Gender and poverty alleviation & Integrated water management in the communities. Key research themes:

To understand the complex adaptive systems and the links to climate variability, water resource management and health, particularly in relation to women in the villages of Rooifontein and Komaggas.

To understand the dynamics of development in relation to community gardens in each of the study sites. Both villages have had failed garden projects in the recent past. This research will seek to understand the reasons for failure and suggest solutions.

To investigate how livestock farmers use water resources for agricultural purposes, and how these water resources are managed (informally on the part of farmers, and formally at local a municipal level) in relation to the settlements of Komaggas and Rooifontein. This will involve three components:

A review of formal water management systems, policies and practices at the level of the municipality and if relevant at the level of Rooifontein and Komaggas.

An assessment of water infrastructure on the Komaggas/Rooifontein commons and on the new commonage farms recently added to these communal areas under the land reform programme.

Assessment of the needs of livestock farmers in Kamassies/Rooifontein in relation to agricultural water needs.
